Privacy Policy
Effective November 3, 2026 · Redbrook Labs
Cahoots is built so that what you write is shared with one person: your partner. This page explains what we keep, where it lives, who can see it, how long we hold on to photos, and how to delete everything.
What we store
- Your account. A sign-in ID from Sign in with Apple or Google, handled by Google Firebase Authentication, plus the email address that sign-in gives us (if you pick "Hide My Email" with Apple, that's a relay address, not your real one). We also keep the first name you choose to show your partner.
- What you add in the app. Your answers, replies and reactions, favorites, notes and "thinking of you" pings, weekly check-ins, questions you write, photos and captions, your days-together date and countdowns, and your shared settings such as topics and pace.
- Spicy Match. Your private yes, maybe and no choices. They are kept apart from everything else and nobody can read your list, including your partner.
- Subscription status. The date your Cahoots Pro runs until, so one purchase covers both of you. Apple handles the payment and we never see your card.
- Notification tokens. So your partner's phone can be told that you answered or sent a note.
- A "last opened" date. Updated at most once a day. We use it only for the photo rule below.
Where it's stored
On your phone and in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore, Cloud Storage and Cloud Functions) in the United States. It is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Who can see it
- Only you and the partner you pair with. Rules on our database enforce this.
- Your partner can read your answer to a question, or your weekly check-in, only after they have answered the same one.
- Spicy Match works like this: each of you fills in your own list. A server then compares the two lists and shows each of you only the items you both said yes or maybe to. Your "no" answers and anything your partner didn't also pick are never shown.
- Notifications never include your answers or notes. They only say that something happened, such as "Sam answered today's question."
- Redbrook Labs doesn't read your content, unless you send it to us for support or the law requires it.
Photos: limits and how long we keep them
- Photos on answers and photos in your scrapbook share one limit: 50 for free, 2,000 with Cahoots Pro. Photos are shrunk before they upload.
- Your photos stay for as long as either of you opens Cahoots at least once a year.
- If a whole year goes by and neither of you has opened the app, we send each of you a reminder about a month before, and then delete the photos. Your written answers are not deleted.
- If Pro ends, we delete nothing. You just can't add new photos until you're back under 50.
- Deleting a memory removes its photo from our storage. A copy of photos you've viewed is kept in your phone's cache, and your phone clears it when you sign out or delete your account.
Ads
The free version shows non-personalized banner ads from Google AdMob on the Today, Explore, History, Us and Settings screens. Today only shows one when the day's question is a regular one, not a spicy question or one you wrote. Ads never appear inside a conversation or next to your answers, and your answers are never sent to Google's ad systems. To show ads, AdMob collects some device information such as your device identifiers, ad interactions and an approximate location from your IP address. We don't ask permission to track you across other companies' apps, and we don't. In the EU, UK and similar regions, Google's consent form asks for your choices first. Cahoots Pro removes ads for both of you.
On-device AI and dictation
On supported iPhones, follow-up suggestions and question drafts come from Apple's on-device model, so what you write for those features stays on your phone. Dictation uses Apple's speech recognition, and the microphone is only on while you hold it open.
What we don't do
We don't sell or rent your data, we don't share it with data brokers, and we don't use analytics or tracking SDKs of our own.
Unlinking and deleting
- Unlink (Settings) stops all new sharing for both of you. Past questions stay visible to the two of you in History.
- Delete my account (Settings, or the menu on the sign-up screens) permanently deletes your answers, notes, check-ins, questions you wrote, photos you added, your profile and your sign-in. If you signed in with Apple, you'll be asked to confirm with Apple once more so we can end the connection. Your partner keeps their own answers. If neither of you remains, the whole shared space is deleted, photos included.
- You can also email support@redbrooklabs.com to ask us to delete your account.
Adults only
Cahoots is for adults and isn't made for children. The app is rated 18+, and the spicy topics and Spicy Match ask you to confirm you're 18 or older before they turn on. Either of you can switch them off for both of you.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date above, and tell you in the app if the change matters.
